What is Person-Centred Counselling?

As a person-centred counsellor, my work is grounded in the theories of psychologist Carl Rogers. Rogers’ method emphasises the individual’s innate drive to grow, heal, and reach their full potential. He believed that this growth is possible when we are provided with the right environment.

The key components to nurturing that environment are:

  • Unconditional Positive Regard: Your therapist will accept and value you without judgment.

  • Empathy: Your therapist will strive to understand your perspective, helping you feel truly heard and validated.

  • Congruence: Your therapist will be open and honest with you, fostering a therapeutic relationship based on trust.

In person-centred counselling, the client lead their sessions. They bring the issues feelings, and thoughts, they choose to the room, and explores them along with the therapist. A therapist is not there to ‘fix’ you but to ‘walk alongside’ you and support you as you find your own answers.

Some of the benefits of person-centred counselling include:

  • Self-Discovery: Gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your emotions.

  • Empowerment: Learn to trust your own judgment and abilities.

  • Non-Judgmental Support: Feel safe to express your true self.

Person-centred counselling is a collaborative and empowering approach that places you at the centre of your own therapeutic journey. By providing a supportive and non-judgmental environment, it helps you unlock your potential and achieve personal growth.
